Day 15

Hong Kong to Singapore

Ha Long

View of the bay and the ship
Rock formations off Ha Long city
The ship docked at Ha Long in the morning, but we decided to stay on board in the morning, then have lunch before going to the city in the afternoon.

The city is spread on both sides of the mouth of Cua Luc Bay (Vịnh Cửa Lục) so we wanted to see the other side of  Ha Long which includes the CBD.

We caught a taxi into town, again stopping briefly at the Ha Long market as we passed through the city. A main feature of the city is a modern, metallic, golden sculpture at the Clock Tower Roundabout.

Louise and Alan had give us given us the name of a massage parlour that they had used, and so while we were in the city we decided to go there for a massage.

It was not easy to find as there were few street signs, but eventually we found it and both had a very relaxing one hour body and foot massage - and at a reasonable price.

I was fascinated by the take-up of electric vehicles in vietnam, not only the Vinfast cars (the company only manufactures electric vehicles) but also the eclectric scooters.

One of the many unfinished and abandoned buildings
As I learned on our previous visit, the many unfinished and abandoned buildings in Ha Long were the result of non-compliance construction by corrupt developers and an over-estimation of how much of a tourist attraction the city would become - it was a cause of some embarrassment to the locals.
